Grants Office

The Grants Office is located at 212 2nd Street East, and is open Monday through Friday from 8:00-5:00 (4:30 during the summer). The office welcomes drop-in visits, but if you would prefer to make an appointment, please call extension 4441 or 4046 to schedule a meeting.

In cooperation with the Office of the Provost, the Grants Office offers a range of resources and services to faculty, departments, and programs seeking external funding. These resources and services include the identification of resources, assistance with proposal preparation, and administration of grants.

The Grants Office also maintains a list of recent grants awarded to Carleton as an institution and to Carleton faculty members.

Carleton College faculty members have two primary resources for obtaining funding to support their academic activities (scholarly research, curricular improvements, writing, conferences, etc.):

  1. The Office of the Provost
  2. The Grants Office

Although the division of responsibilities between these two offices is not always distinct, generally the Office of the Provost handles internally funded grants, whereas the Grants Office handles externally funded grants, often as the agent of other campus departments and offices.

As such, the Grants Office secures funding from corporations, foundations, and government agencies to support institutional priorities: activities selected as important by the President, the Board of Trustees, the Provosts, the faculty, and the administration. These priorities can include furthering individual faculty members’ research projects, finding support for faculty salaries, creating academic programs, developing innovative curricula and courses, buying equipment, establishing endowed funds, securing financial aid for students, acquiring capital purchases, and constructing new facilities.
